The Coast Guard has almost doubled the Tuition Assistance cap for sailors pursuing degrees, raising the cap from $2,500 to $4,500 for the rest of the year.
This comes as a surprise to many, since the Coast Guard's budget for Tuition Assistance in 2014 was down from $12 million to only $7.8 million. However, a substantial drop in its usage this year has led to an excess.
The Coast Guard could have reallocated the money to other segments of the Training and Education budget, but felt that the best usage of the money would be to help Coast Guard members improve their education.
The service will continue to monitor available Tuition Assistance funds, and make changes if necessary.
